Garba: The Pride of Gujarat Marks the Final Eve of Vyakhyanmala 2025

The speaker for the third session of the season, Mr. Parth Tarpara, spoke on Garbo – Gujarat ni Asmita (Garbo—The Identity of Gujarat). A well-known lyricist of the Gujarati film industry, voice artist, and ex-radio jockey, Mr. Tarpara presented the invaluable sentiments of Gujaratis regarding their identity, Garba. He shared his insights on the art form, often described in the quotes of Gujarat's most loved laureates. A unique form of devotion depicted in the stories of Lord Krishna, Garba has lesser-known types, such as Rasda, Garbo (performed by women), and Garbi (performed by men). How Garba became part of Navratri and UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list has been a subject of the speaker's research.

He asserted that the uniqueness of this art is because it celebrates and reveres womanhood. Furthermore, he commented on how nonchalant we have been about mistakes made while performing Garba and even while singing the hymn ‘Jay Adhya Shakti’. Garba is not just a dance; even devotional songs are called Garba, which are intricately lyricised to describe deities and Hindu mythology. A short clip of Garba played during the session further complemented its beauty.

Dr. Subhash Brahmbhatt, Vice-Chancellor of K.N. University, graced the evening as Chief Guest and elaborated on Gujarat’s proud identity. The intrigued audience posed numerous questions, which were graciously answered by the speaker and the Chief Guest.
